Does BigChampagne collect and report information about unauthorized or illegal P2P file sharing?
Yes. Like it or not, the vast majority of online entertainment media is now acquired for free on P2P file sharing networks, and BigChampagne is committed to providing information about consumption, not just sales.

What is P2P file sharing?
Peer-to-peer ("P2P") file sharing has been called a lot of things: a "piratical bazaar," a digital revolution, a consumer movement.... Certainly P2P is by now a genuine worldwide phenomenon and a lightning rod for controversy.

Technically, P2P is an architecture for distributed computing. Socially, the best-known P2P networks are online swap meets, communities first popularized by Napster and now accessed using clients like eDonkey, Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and hundreds of others. P2P users congregate in a free exchange, chatting about, searching for and "sharing" digital music files as well as movies, images, software, games... virtually anything you can imagine parked in a shared folder on a desktop.

Does BigChampagne know how many people are illegally downloading?
This is a simple question with a complex answer, because the file sharing community is anything but static. People log on and off of the networks at different intervals. People use a variety of applications to access different networks. Anonymity is an important aspect of these communities. There is no strict "headcount" of the total P2P universe in terms of unique users, though there are literally millions of individuals logged on at any particular time.

What about privacy concerns? Does BigChampagne track personal information without permission?
BigChampagne measures online content but does not track people. We strictly comply with the privacy policies of each of our reporting partners.

On file sharing networks, the only information we archive is explicitly shared with the file sharing community by the users.

Asking for permission to browse on a P2P network would be like asking permission to browse the web -- it's neither necessary nor appropriate, because the information has been published by the user for the very purpose of public access. (It is worth noting here that BigChampagne's research is based on the observed behavior of P2P users, not self-reported data. In other words, rather than report on what people say, BigChampagne reports on what people actually do.)
